Toyota and Tesla Collaborate on Next RAV4 EV
RAV4 EV
Working together to streamline electric vehicle production without
compromising vehicle quality, Toyota and Tesla Motors debuted a
milestone achievement at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show: the
second-generation, Tesla-powered RAV4 Electric Vehicle (EV)
demonstration vehicle.
The new RAV4 EV model features a battery and other related parts
built and supplied by Tesla to meet Toyota's engineering specifications
in performance, quality and durability. The demo also features seamless
integration of the Tesla powertrain, led by the Toyota Motor Engineering
and Manufacturing North America (TEMA) Technical Center in Michigan.
Although the next RAV4 EV will weigh more than the current RAV4 V6
because of the powertrain, it will accelerate from zero to 601
miles per hour nearly as quickly and contain just as much cargo space.2
Additional features will include a new front bumper, grille, fog lamps
and headlamps, as well as a push-button shifter, dashboard meters,
available custom seat trim and more.
Approximately
30 vehicles will be built for a demonstration and evaluation program
through 2011, aiming at market arrival of a fully engineered RAV4 EV in
2012. The goal is a vehicle that is competitive in both performance and
price, with drivability characteristics as close to the conventional
RAV4's as possible.

Toyota has announced that prior to the arrival of the RAV4 EV in
2012, it will launch, in key global markets, the Prius PHV (plug-in
hybrid) and a small EV commuter vehicle. It will also aim to debut seven
all-new (not next-generation) hybrid models by the end of 2012, and
launch its first commercialized hydrogen fuel cell vehicle by 2015. It's
all part of Toyota's approach to sustainable mobility.
